Pinch Harmonics

Share

In this guitar lesson you will how to play pinch harmonics.  A pinch harmonic is achieved when the thumb or index finger on the picking hand slightly catches the string after it is picked, canceling the fundamental of the string, and letting one of the overtones dominate.  It can really only be played on an electric guitar as it doesn’t resonate very loud on an acoustic.  It takes a few tries to get the hang of, but it’s not too difficult.

Here are some notable songs featuring lots of pinch harmonics:

  • Black Label Society - Counterfeit God
  • ZZ Top - Woke Up With Wood
  • Coheed and Cambria - Welcome Home
  • ZZ Top - La Grange
  • Anything Zakk Wylde
