The Wrecking Crew and Ovation
The Wrecking Crew was a group of LA studio musicians who played on seemingly every hit record in the 60s and 70s. To this day when you hear a classic recording from the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, The Mamas and there Papas, The Monkees, Simon and Garfunkle, Johnny Rivers, Sonny and Cher, Tijuana Brass or anything featuring Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” to name but a few, you are hearing this amazing group of young musicians that included the likes of Leon Russell, Hal Blaine and of course the pre TV Glen Campbell.
But perhaps the most famous guitarist from The Wrecking Crew was Tommy Tedesco. Tommy played on more hit records and TV theme songs than he could ever remember, a couple of them being the memorable guitar riffs from “Bonanza” and Simon and Garfunkle’s “Mrs. Robinson”. Tommy was a big fan of Ovation and like his Wrecking Crew partner Glen Campbell used several models throughout his career.
Just before Tommy passed away in 1997, his son, filmmaker Denny Tedesco began producing a documentary about his father and these famous players. Not long ago the film was finally completed and has since gone on to win numerous awards at film festivals throughout the country. But one formidable task remains before Denny Tedesco can release “The Wrecking Crew”. It seems that when you include music in a film you must pay the licensing fee for each song used. In the case of this film, the soundtrack is virtually hundreds of hit songs with formable fees attached. So Denny is in fundraising mode.
We met Denny a couple of years ago and have remained involved in the project ever since. Recently we donated a 1771AX autographed by Glen Campbell to be auctioned off on The Wrecking Crew website. Glen also remains dedicated to helping get this amazing documentary released. The Wrecking Crew was his musical family before he went on to become a superstar in his own right.
